Chris Thomas, president of Intrepid, has more than 20 years of experience developing and executing hundreds of campaigns for clients including professional sports teams, Fortune 500 companies, government agencies and technology companies. His experience has also encompassed managing more than 100 crises from corporate fraud and data breaches to protests, murders, kidnappings and racial issues.
Chris is probably most recognized for his work with Elizabeth Smart, serving as the official publicist for her family during the 10-month period of her abduction and rescue, managing media during the trial and sentencing of her abductors, planning and executing her surprise wedding in 2012 and helping to position Elizabeth as one of the leading child advocates in the United States.
Chris joined Intrepid in 2001 and took the four-person startup housed in a dilapidated small business complex and helped build the firm into one of the largest and most respected PR agencies in Utah. He is proud of his team, the company’s unique culture, eclectic office space and the opportunity to employ communications as a vehicle to make a difference both for clients as well as the underserved in the community.
Chris played an instrumental role in Intrepid’s election in 2015 as a full partner in the WorldComm Public Relations Group, the largest global partnership of independently owned public relations firms with 143 offices across six continents. He recently helped Intrepid pass the Worldcom Public Relations Group’s rigorous peer review, the communications industry’s most comprehensive peer review process.
Chris has been the recipient of several awards including seven Silver Anvils, the highest honor in the public relations industry, as well as PR Platinum, Tellys, Bulldogs and Golden Spikes. He has been named as one of the nation’s top crisis communicators by PBI Media, has been recognized as Utah’s Professional Communicator of the Year and is a recipient of the National Guard’s Minute Man Award. Under Chris’ leadership, Intrepid has been named Utah top public relations firm 11 times, including the past seven years.
Chris earned a bachelor’s degree in communication from Westminster College and holds a certificate in negotiation from Harvard Law School. He is a contributing author to three books: “Strategic Communications Planning for Public Relations and Marketing,” “Crisis Management Guidebook” and “Behind the Drive: 99 Inspiring Stories from the Life of an American Entrepreneur.” He also works as an adjunct professor at Westminster College teaching a master-level course in crisis communication.
